Application of Remote Sensing and Gis to Demarcate Groundwater Potential Zones of Ottanchattiram Block, Dindugal District, Tamil Nadu, India

The remotely sensed data provides synoptic viewing and repetitive coverage for thematic mapping of natural resources. In the present study hydrogeomorphological mapping has been carried out in Ottanchattiram Block, Dindugal District, Tamil Nadu for delineating groundwater potential zones. Landsat ETM+ Geocoded FCC data in conjunction with Survey of India toposheet (1:50000 scale) were used for thematic mapping. Geomorphic units identified through visual interpretation of FCC include: Residual hill, Colluvial Fill, Pediment and Pediplain. The lineament map has been prepared from the satellite imagery. The drainage map has also prepared from Survey of India Toposhett (50.000 Scale). From this the lineament density contour map has been prepared. An integrated remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) based on hydrogeomorphological, geological and lineament mapping the Ottanchattiram Block has qualitatively been categorized into four groundwater potential zones, viz. good to very good, moderate to good, poor to moderate and very poor to poor.
